Research has linked prolonged use of Depo-Provera to an increased risk of meningioma brain tumors. This is due to medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA), the active ingredient in the birth control shot. MPA can bind to progesterone receptors in the meninges, the protective layers surrounding the brain and spinal cord. This binding can trigger abnormal cell growth, leading to increased cell proliferation in the meninges, which may contribute to the development of meningiomas.
